AT&T To Deliver 350 New Jobs to Detroit Internet Support Jobs to Assist Midwest Customers; Investment Continues After Video Reform

DETROIT, Sept. 23, 2008—AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T) announced that AT&T Michigan will bring 350 new jobs to downtown Detroit. Detroit Mayor Kenneth V. Cockrel, Jr. and Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth Director Keith W. Cooley joined local leaders and AT&T officials today to celebrate the company’s announcement.

“This is a great day for the City of Detroit and our residents,” Cockrel said. “We are thrilled to have these jobs coming to downtown Detroit. I applaud AT&T for keeping its promise to deliver new jobs and its continued commitment to the residents of not only the City of Detroit, but also the state of Michigan.

“I am pleased to see these jobs being created in Michigan,” Cooley said. “I am proud of the work the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and AT&T have done teaming together to bring these jobs to Detroit where they are sorely needed.”

These new jobs are part of an initiative AT&T announced in 2006 involving the relocation of many customer service positions that had previously been outsourced, many of them offshore. Employees in the new Detroit-based positions will assist AT&T High Speed Internet subscribers who self-install their service or have basic questions about the service. The employees will work in AT&T’s Michigan headquarters building at 444 Michigan Avenue.

“This center is a win for the City of Detroit and the state of Michigan,” said Detroit State Senator Buzz Thomas. “AT&T has shown time and time again that it is ready, willing and able to support Detroit and bringing these jobs back from overseas is yet another example of that support.”

“I applaud Governor Granholm and our state legislators for creating an environment here in Michigan which makes it possible to bring these jobs back home,” said Gail Torreano, president of AT&T Michigan. “We have been committed to Michigan and Detroit and are thrilled to continue our investment here and hire hundreds of hardworking Detroit workers.”

When video reform legislation went into effect on January 1, 2007, AT&T announced its commitment to invest $620 million in network upgrades as part of the rollout of the company’s U-verse services as well as create 2,000 new positions across Michigan by the end of 2009. To date, AT&T has announced the creation of over 1,600 jobs and is providing its suite of U-verse services to parts of over 175 communities across the state.

“We are pleased to have worked together with AT&T to bring jobs back from overseas to the hard working people of Michigan and Governor Granholm also deserves applause for her role in putting Michigan workers first,” said Shannon Kirkland, staff representative for the Communications Workers of America.
